Hi Dave,
Here is some info from Dr.Jerome E.G.Masters. Fisheries Technical Officer. E.A.
The meeting will run between 10 am and 4 00 pm. The meeting will have presentations on eel conservation and fishery legislation. The idea behind the meeting is to provdie a stimulus for delegates to carry out measures which will lead to improved habitats and increasd numbers of eels.
This is important becasue, since the late 1970`s, there has been a progessive decline in recruitment to the European Eel population. Numbers of young eels entering the fishery are belived to have fallen by up to 95-99%. In addition to the eefects on commercial and recreational fisheries, falling eel numbers will also affect thier predators, inlcuding species of conservation importance(otters, bitterns). Many Biodiversity Action Plan(BAP) habits are of importance to eels(rivers and streams, reedbed, wet woodland and ponds) and in 2007, eels were themselves added to the UK BAP species list.
