I seem to remember that Phil Smith appeared on a fishing programme together with Brian Crawford. They were fishing the grand union and showed a rig with wire being tied onto the line to stop the eels from swallowing the bait.

Phil Smith did ring me to appear on the programme but due to my work rota, I could not take part so I asked Phil to take my place.
It was some years ago mind you. :)

I have used the same rig kevin, it was shown in the screaming reels on channel 4. It was called the t-bar rig at the time.
A plastic cable tie is used to prevent the hook being taken too deep, it does work to an extent but at the time I was not fully convinced. but it is worth a second look. Thanks for the reminder.

Not that I am aware of Mr Orbeel - but I dont think eel deaths are common unless poorly handled or deep hooked and mistreated. When in doubt leave the hook in - if you can't see it - leave it alone.Having said that St ives lakes are so big -Who would know?????.Rather like the saint of Salt - big leads, stiff boom and a small trace are the way to go in my opinion - sit by the rods and strike at anything to minimise deep hooking.

No death reported. Walked round much of it since then and certainly not seen anything but as Mard says, big place so who knows. Still on there for a few more weeks but thrown the eel towel in now...

I firmly believe that the great Saint Salt may have blessed the waters - and hopefully across the rest of the country too.

Or did the evil antichrist mingle scuttle round the complex the next day, and pick up all the dead ones to use as zander baits - we should be told!

Mingle has it spot on. it all comes down to the unhooking and handling of the eels and of couse the indicator system used! It can the same with pike

To the fallen angel Mingle

The bible tells us of many feats of angling, such as this:

John 21:1-14: After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples, Fickling and Barrett, were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Take those eel sections off, and put on your hooks some of those small jack pike and cast on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
